Should You Get a Prenup?
The answer is yes. Article over.
You may be thinking: Nicole, it's not that simple! But the decision, in fact, is that simple. It's the conversation that can be difficult.
And I get it. If you're about to get married, you are a smitten kitten who is planning on spending happily-ever-after with your fiancé-to-be. You don't want to think about a prenup, because that feels like acknowledging the possibility that your happily-ever-after may be not be so "ever after" after all.
But here's the thing: if you don’t have a prenup, it’s not like you get a second chance and get to do a post-nup if things go sideways. If you do not create a prenup, you’re giving away your decision making power— and the state gets to decide what happens in the case of a divorce. Who would you rather have deciding your fate? You? Or a judge? I'm guessing I know the answer to that.
The prenup conversation is something I'm going through with my fiancé right now, so take it from me: the prenup talk doesn't need to be dramatic or dark. I've found that the way to ease a tricky situation is to acknowledge the trickiness openly. Here's a script you can use:
"My love, my fiancé, my forever boo thing—
I know this is weird, but a prenup conversation is what Rich Bitches do— and you're marrying me for my Rich Bitchness, right? And I fully support and trust you, which is why I want to make sure we have a prenup that feels good and comfortable to you. Let's just rip the bandaid off and have this conversation. Once we're done, we can treat ourselves with a super romantic date night. Love you oodles."
That wasn't so bad, was it?
